A prevenção frente às alterações no sistema estomatognático de crianças com síndrome de Down: revisão de literatura

Abstract

Introduction: Children with Down Syndrome (DS) are prone to alterations in the Stomatognathic System, and the first year of life is a period of great importance for the observation and prevention of these alterations. The dental surgeon (DC) has a prominent role in the pediatric dentistry approach, acting early in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team. Objective: This literature review has as main objective to highlight the importance of dental follow-up from the first year of life of a child with DS, discussing the main oral alterations that they present and highlighting how the DC can intervene to prevent these main problems. Methodology: The study consisted of a descriptive research analyzing studies published in the national and international scientific literature, with data collection carried out in the online databases PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO and LILACS. Conclusion: Early intervention in the face of problems in the stomatognathic system of children with DS is essential for the quality of life of the individual. It is necessary that the dental surgeon apply the promotion in oral health from the first year of life of these people and use some methods such as the Palatal Memory Plate and the Maxilla Expander Device as important allies in this phase.
